The hospital made a billing error and charged my labor-and-delivery services as "uninsured."Bill total: $200 (thanks to a very generous uninsured patient program.)For the last few years, we have been paying some (very expensive) insurance premiums out-of-pocket and have not used our insurance, so we called and corrected their error and gave them our insurance info again.Bill total: $8000.Welcome to America, folks, where you pay insurance monthly for the privilege of paying the hospital more when you have a medical need.(I think there SHOULD be generous hospital policies to help low income patients. But the experience makes me wonder - what am I paying insurance for??)#wtf #healthcarenightmare #isthisreallife

We’re paying monthly for COBRA and have seriously considered dropping insurance and going to self pay for this very reason. It’s silly. And I am also a huge advocate for health policies that benefit low income patients.

I've been seriously considering dropping insurance for next year and on up to age 65. If I sock away every penny of what I now pay in premiums, unless I have something really serious happen, I should be good. It's just that worry about "what if?" that keeps us hooked. That and the tax-deductible aspect, and also it's what we're conditioned to believe by that very same insurance industry that makes a profit off us. But for someone self-employed, the thought of "having" to pay almost $10K per year for essentially basic coverage with nothing except an annual wellness visit before I meet a $7K deductible is really nauseating. I pay for everything cash already. It's amazing how much cheaper it is.

Insurance fraud... I mean I would say it's close to it. They continually get investors and increase profits with little pay out. I also am appreciated of the low cost of someone who can't afford insurance or can't obtain. But why should I have to pay $8000 and someone else pay $200? Where is that balance ? They are squeezing the middle class to where this is no longer one and the rich can afford these costs and then everyone else goes bankrupt or csny afford them. We need more legislation for insurance. If I have it; my costs shouldn't be $8000 for a hospital stay. We need change

The profits of corporations given to the executive figure heads are actually earned by the employees who work for pennies on the dollar. On the end, I have been in-network with every single insurance agency that operates in North Carolina since I moved here in 2010. The last place I was employed with had me in-network until November 2023. Do you know it is STILL taking the insurance companies more than 3 months to re-panel me under my own, registered agency? In spite of therapist shortages and the profuse mental health needs of our communities. If a business was genuinely in existence to meet the needs of its members, I would think that they would be knocking people down to get experienced and skilled workers paneled. We have entire counties in need in our state. When I called about the status of one insurance, I was told by the employee tell me that they are not currently paneling therapists who are "virtual only" providers. Our state is huge with some of our counties in very rural areas where there are no therapists. How does this insurance company think these people are going to get mental health services? Of course, most of these people are impoverished & don't really meet the needs of our brilliant politicians.

I praise their efforts on the uninsured patient program - not too common to see that level of discount in my experience. Likely those $8000 bills are helping to subsidize the $200 ones. That said, it would be great to have a system where they cover cost and then an appropriate markup. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason for much of it.

Maybe the HMO is the Primary Cause of the unsubstantiated inflation in Health Care that has infected the Economy.

Needed a MRI. Copay with insurance was $500; the receptionist told me that self-pay was $300. Guess which I chose.

When we left the hospital, both my newborn and I had outstanding bills, even though I had good insurance though my employer and we had no medical complications. I never expected my newborn would have a $2,000 bill in her newly created mychart. I guess coming into the world is not free in this country

Here are three things you probably don’t know about long-term care insurance: 1.By default, most policies do not include any inflation-adjustment to their numbers—what you see is what you will get. Consider adding an inflation-protection rider and be aware of the difference between the ‘simple’ and ‘compound’ options.2.If you’re married or in a committed relationship, you can qualify for a discount on a joint policy.3.If your policy runs out and you do end up going on Medicaid, some state governments consider whether you bought insurance beforehand. If you spend all your long-term care benefits, certain states will qualify you for Medicaid before you fully spend down the rest of your assets. #longtermcareinsurance

In the complex world of healthcare billing, there is no universal requirement for hospitals and providers to bill insurance, including Medicare or Medicaid. The decision to participate in insurance programs is often at the discretion of individual providers. In normal situations, patients should advocate for themselves by being informed about their insurance coverage, seeking in-network providers when possible, and clarifying billing arrangements with healthcare providers. In third-party liability situations, planning is often not possible. However, the No Surprises Billing Act should add a layer of protection, preventing unexpected billing surprises for patients whether or not available insurance is billed, or the hospital maintains a debt or asserts a lien.#themoreyouknow #knowledgeispower #findtherightpartners #synergy.
