Nhuri Bashir, Alshanté Foggo & Shanna Hollis Art Featured In New York - Forever Bermuda (2024)

The Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA] unveiled its “Paint the Town Pink” initiative which features artwork from three Bermuda artists — Nhuri Bashir, Alshanté Foggo, and Shanna Hollis — in various locations in New York City.

A spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Tourism Authority [BTA]has unveiled its “Paint the Town Pink” initiative, a campaign that brings the beauty and creativity of Bermuda to the streets of New York City. This groundbreaking activation features commissioned artwork from three Bermuda artists, whose vibrant murals are now on display in some of NYC’s most iconic locations. The initiative, in collaboration with Travel & Leisure magazine, shines a spotlight on Bermuda’s art scene, positioning the island as a cultural destination beyond sun, sand, and sea.

Bringing Bermuda to New York City

“The “Paint the Town Pink” initiative showcases the unique perspectives of Bermudian artists—Nhuri Bashir, Alshanté Foggo, and Shanna Hollis—who have each created a Bermuda-inspired mural. These installations are strategically located in high-traffic areas across New York City, ensuring maximum visibility and engagement with a key target audience. Each artist was asked to reflect on the question, “What do you think of when you think of Bermuda?” and incorporate the island’s signature pink hue into their creations.

Nhuri Bashir: A Feast for the Eyes

  • Location: W 52nd St & 7th Ave, Times Square, New York, NY 10019

“Nhuri Bashir’s mural in Times Square captures the vibrant energy of Bermuda through a kaleidoscope of colors and contrasting ideas. His work features the iconic Gombey dancers, a symbol of Bermuda’s cultural tapestry that blends African, Native American, and Caribbean influences. Bashir’s artistic vision pays homage to Bermuda’s cosmopolitan spirit and the environment that supports and inspires its creatives. “A thriving art scene is a hallmark of a healthy society,” says Bashir, who is proud to contribute to Bermuda’s cultural narrative.

Alshanté Foggo: The Many Faces of Bermuda

  • Location: Varick St at Vandam St, SoHo, New York, NY 10013

“Alshanté Foggo’s mural in SoHo explores the multifaceted identity of Bermuda. Her work is a celebration of the island’s culture and the people who call it home. Foggo’s artistic journey, as detailed in her interview with Travel & Leisure, highlights her deep connection to Bermuda and her passion for showcasing its beauty to the world. Her mural invites viewers to see Bermuda through her eyes—a place of endless inspiration and creativity.

Shanna Hollis: Bermuda Through the Eyes of a Designer

  • Location: 506 W 22nd St, Under the High Line, Meatpacking District, New York, NY 10019

“Shanna Hollis’ mural in the Meatpacking District is a tribute to the natural beauty and artistic heritage of Bermuda. Inspired by her childhood memories of exploring the island’s beaches and coastlines, Hollis’ work reflects her deep love for nature and her community. Her mural is not only a visual feast but also a testament to the island’s enduring influence on her creative journey. Hollis is also currently working on a contemporary installation in Bermuda’s historic Towne of St. George, to support the art-centred experiences sought after by NCL.”

Jamari Douglas, VP Marketing, PR & Communications at BTA, “One of our key goals at the BTA has been to celebrate the unique voice of Bermuda’s creatives throughout all of our visitor-facing marketing. Whether they’re in front of the camera, behind it, on the mic, or expressing themselves through a paintbrush, our community of creators has been an essential part of our journey over the past two years. We’re thrilled to showcase the incredible artwork of these three dynamic artists in some of the most high-traffic locations in the most vibrant city in the world.”

Supporting Bermuda’s National Tourism Plan

A spokesperson added, “The “Paint the Town Pink” initiative aligns with Bermuda’s National Tourism Plan, which aims to reduce seasonality by creating year-round reasons to visit the island. By positioning Bermuda’s art and culture as key drivers for travel, the BTA taps into the growing demand for cultural tourism. Visitor data has shown that beyond the allure of its beaches, Bermuda’s rich artistic heritage and vibrant cultural scene are significant draws for travelers. This campaign not only showcases Bermuda’s talent on an international stage but also supports the island’s efforts to attract visitors, especially from October to March.
